Rotten teeth, as the name suggests, are teeth that are rotten or decayed. It starts with the erosion of tooth enamel. Regular brushing and flossing prevents the harmful effects of tooth decay. If not treated properly, then it may lead to rotten teeth. The first sign of rotten teeth is discomfort and pain in your teeth and gums. There are many other symptoms that can be attributed to tooth decay or rotten teeth depending on your age and diet. Let us look at some of the rotten teeth symptoms.

Discolored Teeth

Your teeth appear white because of your protective tooth enamel. But, when plaque and tartar formation increases, it erodes the enamel and exposes the dentin to external environment. If not taken care of the harmful bacteria and plaque may penetrate deep into your teeth and cause cavity. If left untreated, your teeth may decay and appear darker in color, thus signifying rotten teeth.

Bad Breath

When your tooth starts decaying, you may experience foul breath problem. A decayed tooth is room for bacteria that leads to halitosis or bad breath. Bad breath indicates that you may have a badly decayed or rotten teeth that needs to be treated. Regular brushing and flossing helps to keep bacteria under control, thus preventing cavities and reduces halitosis.

Teeth Sensitivity

If you experience sensitivity and pain in your teeth while eating or drinking excessive hot and cold foods and beverages, then it could indicate that your teeth or tooth is beginning to rot. The erosion of the enamel can expose the underlying dentin, and your tooth pulp to the environment. Intake of extreme hot and cold foods can result in sensitivity. Teeth sensitivity can be normal for some people, but if you experience an abrupt sensitivity to temperatures, then it is likely because of rotten teeth.

Swollen Gums

An infection in your gums is one of the rotten teeth symptoms. If your gums are swollen or red, then your tooth or teeth may have decayed. Swollen gums indicate deep decay within a tooth which has spread into the gum via the tooth’s root. Regular dental visits can help detect and treat minor cavities before they become a significant problem.

Cavity

Having a cavity is the first sign of a rotten tooth that appears as chalky white specs on the outer surface of the tooth. If cavity is recognized at an early stage, it can be easily treated. If left untreated, the tooth cavity will progress and will erode your tooth enamel. Eventually, cavities form as the enamel wears away, leaving holes on your tooth surface. And, as it penetrates deep into your teeth, it may cause your tooth to rot.
